As a child of the 90s, this is a big deal for me. Most of us all know and love Brandy and Monica’s 1998 hit song The Boy Is Mine. I know you know the words to this song by heart! And ladies, don’t act like you and your friend didn’t pretend you were Brandy and Monica while you sang this song in your room. The song is one of the longest number one hits in history, as it remained on top of Billboard’s Hot 100 for 13 weeks in 1998.
Well, to celebrate the producer of the song, Rodney Jerkins’ 20th anniversary, Ariana Grande and Jessie J will be teaming up again to remake one of the most beloved songs of the late 90s. We have seen the two singers collaborate before, along with Nicki Minaj for their hit song Bang Bang. As a part of the anniversary celebration, singer Sam Smith, known for his song Stay, will also be covering the late Whitney Houston’s song It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay.
Though Ariana Grande and Jessie J have incredible and flawless voices, they have some biiiig shoes to fill, left behind by the two R&B queens of the late 90’s. The internet sure has a lot of mixed feeling about the remake, as there have been several posts on Twitter and Instagram in support, as well as in dismay. Let’s just hope these two do justice to such a classic 90’s hit.
And just to refresh your memory, here is the original music video to The Boy Is Mine:
