New Maori Movie ‘The Dead Lands’ Premieres This Week

Entertainment 31 Oct 2014   »   by Honestine Pa'ala-Fraser

We have been anticipating this movie for quite some time now, and it is finally here. The Dead Lands, featuring actors James Rolleston, Te Kohe Tuhaka, Lawrence Makoare, and former Once Were Warriors actress Rena Owen star in this intense action-adventure movie that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat! The Dead Lands made its premiere in New Zealand on October 30th, and will continue to premiere around the world as followed.

A basic synopsis of the movie reveals that it is about Hongi (Rolleston), the teenage son of a Maori chief in pre-colonial New Zealand, who must avenge his father’s murder to bring peace and honor to his loved one’s souls after his tribe was tragically slaughtered. Being outnumbered by antagonist Wirepa  (Tuhaka) and his tribe, Hongi’s only hope is to go through the dangerous and forbidden Dead Lands to seek out help from the “Warrior” (Makoare), a ruthless fighter and ruler who can defeat Wirepa.

While the majority of these types of movies cast Caucasian actors for the roles, the movie will be staying true to its roots and has a dominantly Maori and Polynesian cast and crew, which will be exciting to see on screen.  Fijian director Toa Fraser has worked hard to keep the movie authentic as possible. Be sure to check out The Dead Lands this weekend!
