Growing up listening to Rap artists such as 2pac, Biggie, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Warren G, and others has helped many rappers become the artists they are today, but as for Dallas Kacey, he grew up listening to his father spit rhymes and lyrics. Because rapping was a part of his life early on, Dallas was easily influenced to become a songwriter and rapper. Born Dallas Kacey Tuliau, this 18-year-old Samoan rapper from Long Beach has focused much of his time and effort to his music and he’s ready to do big things as a young rapper.

TWID: Where does your passion for music come from and how has that influenced you as an artist?

Dallas: It comes from my dad. He would always rap when I was a young kid. It influenced me especially when he would rap with his friends. It made me a good writer because I would always sit and jot whatever was on my mind.

TWID: What age did you realize you can rap?

Dallas: 10-12 years old.

TWID: What do you talk about in your music and how is it different from others?

Dallas: Real life stuff. I try to touch down on relationships, drugs, etc. I don’t want to promote drugs! You can still be a good artist without doing any of that negative stuff.

TWID: What makes you stand out from other Rap artists?

Dallas: My delivery is different from other rappers and my substance of what I rap about. No rapper actually talks about God.

TWID: What motivates you?

Dallas Kacey

Dallas: What motivates me is my family and our situation. Growing up, we didn’t have a lot. God gave me a talent and I wanna put it to use and one day I’ll provide for them.

TWID: What are some of your struggles you’ve gone through that made you the person you are today?

Dallas: Losing my grandfather. He was really close to me and he taught me a lot about religion and being the man of the family, so I thank him for everything.

TWID: What artist has influenced you the most and why?

Dallas: J.Cole. What he talks about is real-life situations just like how I do and I play off his roles and catch on with his type of rhythm.

TWID: Who are your inspirations?

Dallas: J.Cole, Dolla, Pac, Biggie, Lauryn Hill, and Eminem.

TWID: If you had a chance to work with any artist who would it be and why?

Dallas: Lauryn Hill because she can sing and rap. She’s my favorite female artist.

TWID: What can we expect from you this year?

Dallas: Upcoming performances. Expect a lot of music coming your way.

TWID: Do you have any final words for our Polynesian people or anyone who wants to become a rapper?

Dallas: I appreciate the support. Team Poly has an endless love and will always have ya back. Make music for yourself and not for everyone else. Don’t let anyone say you can’t do anything. Just keep grindin!

And that’s WhatItDo! Don’t forget to cop Dallas Kacey’s new mixtape “Cloud Seven” on September 17. You’ll never know where you might end up if you don’t try! Never give up on your dreams.
