What do you call a star that undergoes a sudden, extreme increase in brightness across the electromagnetic spectrum, becoming one hundred million times brighter than the sun and creating a nebula that radiates radio waves, X-rays, and light, for hundreds or thousands of years? You call it a supernova. Well, if the science lesson was too confusing for you, let us break it down. Basically a supernova is hot, explosive, and full of energy – 3 things that are also true about 19-year-old, up & coming music producer Malcolm Massey aka SuperNovaMusic!
When a supernova occurs, it happens fast but lasts for centuries. While fairly new to the game, Massey has already accomplished quite a bit. “I’ve only started making beats with a serious passion for about 8 or 9 months. I was messing around with it and didn’t take it too seriously at first, but everything just fell into place.” In that short span of time SuperNovaMusic has become a Top 25 SoundClick.com producer, collaborated with Billy tha Kid and Trae tha Truth, worked with two inspirational colleagues -online producers dMillionaire Beats and PrezLoopz, produced beats for some of Brooklyn’s hottest underground artists, been featured on a SONY Produced Mixtape “Street Empire”, and is showing no signs of slowing down! He says, “I’m getting a team together and I’m getting an R&B singer to start doing hooks on beats and I’m just expanding and getting a group of artists together, to make sure my music isn’t just from me, it’s from more than one person.” And that in the future, “I see myself starting my own independent label, having my own artists and being a mentor to making independent music for mainstream people…I look at myself as more of a producer than just a beat maker.”
Massey says, “[Currently] I’m working with Dead Eye Soldier, one of the top rappers in Brooklyn right now. I’ve sold a bunch of beats to underground artists and everything. I have my website that people can buy beats from, but there’s definitely a lot more to come.”
A supernova is rare, and only occurs under the perfect conditions, but when it does, it is a sight to be seen! Likewise, the combination of Massey’s background in music and his creative environment has provided the perfect conditions for this rising star to explode! Born in France but raised in Brooklyn, Massey says, “New York is more of a melting pot where so many different cultures clash and collide. I think it’s one of the best places to grow up because you’re exposed to so much and you can absorb so much information, so much culture. For me, as a producer it’s great because you need different ideas and different concepts for music, so to be exposed to so many different kinds of people helps so much as far as being creative.”
Music has always been an influence in Massey’s life and he grew up playing the violin, piano, and guitar. Massey says, “I think music is almost everything! I feel like every time I had an obstacle or bad situation in life, I feel like whenever I listened to music, or I turned to music, it always helped me through no matter what. Some people may not agree because it may not affect them in that way, but I make beats because it affects me in such a way that is real, it means the world to me. I feel like it’s something that’s meant to be.” Recognizing that emotion is at the center of true music, his music is unique—full of excitement while exuding a hint of hypnotic serenity at the same time. Listening to it evokes a range of emotions which allow you to discover deeper meaning in his sound. It is no wonder Massey says, “The things that inspire me the most are things that are out of the ordinary, things that catch my eye because I feel like, with my music, I don’t make beats just like everyone else, I try to be as different as possible because I feel like that’s part of who I am as a person and I express that through my music.”
Massey says, “Music is a part of me because, for me personally, it allows me to express who I am in the best way I know and if that’s through beats then it’s through beats, if it’s through just playing an instrument then it’s through that. That’s the best way to express who I am as a person and I feel like other people can feed off of what I put out or what I express—people understand it. They can vibe to it and then they understand or feel the emotion….I’m hoping to put out good music that people love, that’s my aim.” That’s definitely WhatItDo!
